Bronte fans may be interested in reading something in another Yorkshire publication' The Dalesman'. Readers were asked to vote for their favourite Yorkshire icons- to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the magazine and various celebrities contributed by writing about theirs. Ashley Jackson, the artist, chose Top Withins as his icon- saying it captures the essence of Yorkshire and the dramatic moorland setting gave inspiration to the Brontes. The Bronte sisters themselves come in at number four and 'Wuthering Heights' is mentioned at number fifty seven. Graham's Lady Magazine- a periodical based in Philadelphia-
criticised Emily's masterpiece describing it as a compound of vulgar depravity and unnatural horrors. How interesting that whilst that magazine ceased publication in 1858 Wuthering Heights is today read and loved the world over!
