Of course these celebrations have not been possible during the last few years but, as stated in the original blog, useful as electronic contact is, there is really no substitution for the atmosphere that exists for those few days in Haworth. An atmosphere of friendship and true dedication to this remarkable family- in the village they made famous.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20896212.post-27366188121206890582022-04-18T16:17:15.091+01:002022-04-18T16:17:15.091+01:00Hello, sorry for this belated reply to one of your...Hello, sorry for this belated reply to one of your posts. I have been researching the Bells for many years, as they were ancestors of my late wife Ann Bell. I am anxious to know the names of Rev Arthur Bells mother’s parents. Family tradition states that her grandfather was Rev Alan Bell who came from Scotland. He lived to be one hundred years and is buried right inside the gate of Glenavy cemetery. Arthur Nicholls Bell left a very informative family tree of other members of the family, but told us nothing about his own family. Do you have any contacts in Glenavy that could throw light on this? I am sure the original house is in ruin now. Thank you for reading my letter. It was clear that he had been an established past of St Martin-in- the- Fields and had become close to the heart of the community there.
It was obvious from the Reverend Dr Wells' address that Dudley had lived a full life with many interests and his close attention to detail was how he had lived that life.
We at the Bronte Society had benefitted from this trait as anything Dudley did for the Society, whether it was giving a lecture, leading a walk, or chairing a meeting, was done with great care and attention.
The Reverend Evens said he remembered Dudley at services sitting near the back at the right hand side. I will remember him in St Michael and All Angels Church in Haworth at the annual thanksgiving services for the Bronte family. Here he would be greeting fellow members in his cheerful, friendly way, reading a lesson in his clear voice and singing the hymns with great gusto.
Dudley was held in high regard in the Bronte Society. He was always friendly, welcoming and always willing to share his great knowledge of the Bronte family.
At the service his brother showed the great love they had shared and I feel that he will miss Dudley very much. I am sure ,however, that he will take comfort from the words in one of the hymns sung this afternoon.
'He knows he at the end shall life inherit.' We were very interested to hear the history of the house which was presented in a very informative, unstuffy and friendly manner. We were made to feel as if everyone present were regarded as friends and Sir James, quietly in the background, was setting out the cups and saucers for refreshments! At that time the hidden room had not been discovered but it had been when I went on a Bronte Society excursion- after 2004.That day members were lucky enough to be allowed- limited numbers at a time- to visit the attic room. We had to pass through a series of rooms before we eventually came to the last one. The room was bare except for a single rocking chair and I felt that it had an aura of coldness, sadness and tragedy. It was not too hard to imagine a solitary figure, confined in that cheerless room, with only a very small window to let in the light, rocking backwards and forwards all day long. It was with some relief, I recall, that I descended the narrow staircase and joined fellow members for a wander round the grounds. I probably was not the only person who would pause in their meanderings and look up to that top storey at Norton Conyers and perhaps think that in an earlier century a face could have looked longingly down on people who had the freedom to wander the grounds of that magnificent house at will.
Isobel Stirk
I.M.
